Sole Kolkata-Sikkim flight to go off air, hunt starts for alternatives
SILIGURI: SpiceJet is set to withdraw the flight from Kolkata to Pakyong this month-end, severing the air connectivity with Sikkim.
The airline on Thursday announced the withdrawal of the Kolkata-Pakyong service from October 30 till further notice. The Delhi-Pakyong service, too, will be suspended from the same day. A SpiceJet official hinted the services could resume operations five months later, from March.
An airport official said the service would be withdrawn ostensibly for operational reasons and not commercial ones, as incoming and outgoing flights were operating to full capacity. Sources said the airline could be returning the Bombardier Q400 aircraft deployed on the sector to the company that had leased it, prompting the pull-out from Pakyong.
With the only flights to the airport set to be discontinued, Airports Authority of India officials said they were in talks with other airlines to introduce flights as demand exists. “We would want continuity of service and are in talks with other airlines. Let us hope Sikkim is reconnected to the aviation map soon,” an AAI official said.
